In seventeenth-century Europe, art, science and technology were deeply intertwined. Mapping Spaces traces the multifaceted relationship between these disciplines.
37 renowned scholars have examined the influence of scientific thought on Flemish and Dutch landscape art around 1600, approaching the wide-ranging intellectual dialogues between artists, scientists and craftsmen.
Long before new media started using digital satellite imagery, Flemish artists of the seventeenth century employed modern systems of remote sensing. In the great war panoramas of Pieter Snayers technical, topographical and strategic informations of Early Modern times are discernable. This book explores the importance of military cartography in landscape painting and demonstrates, that the evolution of Dutch landscape paintings needs to be considered in the direct context of history painting and the scientific disciplines that supported it. The opulent catalogue with more than 500 pages is lavishly illustrated and presents past exchanges of knowledge that anticipate the techniques of mapping used today.
