No other medium sets type in motion the way that film does: whether artistic film, feature film, commercial, or music video, the Schriftfilm has been established since the pioneering days of film in the late nineteenth century, and has expanded to other areas since then. In a certain way lead type from the early days of printing has found its way onto twenty-first century screens. With analog and digital work methods, type in motion has continued to evolve becoming even more multifaceted. Lettering is not simply used to convey information, but has gained an autonomous, aesthetic status of its own. This volume, containing essays by Friedrich W. Block, Daniel Botz, Klaus Peter Dencker, Annette Gilbert, Michael Lentz, Rolf Sachsse, Bernd Scheffer, Christine Stenzer, Soenke Zehle, and others, focuses mainly on the artistic Schriftfilm, and presents examples of analog and digital films in which animated and designed writing, sometimes set to music, is the main character, a role that goes far beyond what is conventionally expected of type and type in film.
